We’ve (not) re-invented the wheel: The new AC Schnitzer Type IV Wheel Generation

The new AC Schnitzer Type IV alloy recently celebrated its world premiere. This was the start of the fourth generation of the AC Schnitzer alloy and its successors.

Already the new Type IV wheel range has been expanded. In 21" for the BMW X3, the 6-series coupé and the X5, and 20" for the BMW M3 (E46), these dimensions not only suit the BMW design line perfectly but above all have a positive influence on the driving dynamics and stability.

The sporting, elegant 5-spoke rims have been worked with fine filigree. The individual spokes which run in a star pattern out from the wheel centre in pentagon form appear slender and graceful. At the rim bed, a triangular dish is let into each spoke, creating firstly a reminiscence of its predecessor – Type III – and secondly an optical highlight. Designers are currently working on chromed design elements which can be inset optionally in the dishes and give the Type IV wheels a totally different appearance.
Another feature implemented in the Type IV racing rim is the interchangeable stainless steel ring rolled onto the rim bed. This ring protects the rim from damage. If the wheel gets too close to a kerb and is scratched, the stainless steel ring can be replaced.
The surface composition of the Type IV wheel is striking not just in its brilliant lacquer which gives the rim optimum protection against environmental influences. In addition the Type IV wheels are very easy to clean. Even stubborn dirt and brake dust have no chance under regular care. There’s no need for special wheel cleaners: on the contrary, in the long term these will attack the lacquer and can lead to damage and corrosion.
Naturally the new Type IV wheel generation is now being adapted for all vehicles in the
current BMW model range. The enclosed list shows which dimensions are already available.

Because of their modern but classic style, the new AC Schnitzer Type IV alloy and racing rims look superb on the new design line from BMW. The primary objective of development work – as well as the appearance – was the technical aspect, where in countless test miles on public roads and on race tracks, the focus was clearly placed on strength and driving dynamics. Various wheel and tyre combinations were tested thoroughly, taking into account other special conversions e.g. the sports suspension or high performance brakes etc. - and of course also using standard components - before the experienced development engineers at AC Schnitzer were satisfied.
